snapshot backup

i have read that you can create a script to run a snapshot backup of a directory on Linux. I am running Linux Redhat 8.0 with Samba on it. I am currently backing up the Samba directory to tape backup but i also want to take a snapshot of it. Is this possible? And if so where can i read about how to do it? Thanks for any help.
