Smoothwall/IPCop slows down network performance

If I plug in my computers directly to the router then I get the 3Mbps down and 512Mbps up.

If I plug in my computers through either Smoothwall or IPCop and use them as a proxy/gateway, then my connection drops to < 1Mbps down, but my upload still stays 512Mbps.

Is this consistent with what you guys get? Is it a hardware bottle neck? I am running Smoothwall and IPCop on a test Pentium 3 machine with 256MB of RAM. The memory never seems to peak. I believe I am using 100Mbps NIC's.

I figured out the problem. It turns out that one of the generic NIC's is a bad NIC. I replaced it with a new Intel 1Gbps NIC and the speeds are fast!
