smoothwall/ipcop - pppoe settings??

I'm trying to get ipcop (almost identical to smoothwall) up and running. everything is just about right - i can login to the web interface, etc., but i can't get it to connect (pppoe).
the pppoe settings are all mixed in with dial-up settings in the interface, and most of the documentation is focused on dial-up - not too helpful with pppoe details. when i try to conect, the dsl modem lights start flashing, so i know the ipcop box is seeing the modem... just can't seem to login properly.
anyone using ipcop/smoothwall with pppoe/dsl? what are your settings? - PAP or CHAP vs. standard login script, service and concentrator names blank or filled, persistent connection checked, carriage return required, etc.?
I didn't specify service name or concentrator, or DNS settings as my ISP didn't provide them, and i don't need them when connecting via win2k/raspppoe OR e-smith linux (but i'd like to replace my e-smith gateway with ipcop). any ideas?
I'm in Toronto using Primus as my ISP, though i think they are essentially reselling Bell's DSL infrastructure.

thanks

p.s. (a little off topic) seeing as i haven't gotten too far yet, does anyone know what limitation there are on green zone clients talking to orange (DMZ) zone? I know the orange can't talk to green, but is green limited to tcp/ip based communication to orange zone clients (ftp, etc.), or can they file share through samba, appletalk, etc.?
