Smoothwall Express 2.0 - Configuration problems

Hi

Configuration:

Firewall:
Smoothwall Express 2.0
192.168.10.220

Client:
Red Hat 8.0 Linux
Mozzila browser
192.168.10.10

Configuration
Firewall
192.168.10.220
Green
Non-Transparent (ie. no dhcp)
ISP provides dynamic IP address

I successfully installed smoothwall Express 2.0.
I can access http://192.168.10.220:81 and configure the firewall ok.
I configured ppp.and the firewall can connect to my ISP ok.
To achieve this I must have mozilla /edit/perferences/advanced/proxies/
direct connect to the internet enabled.

When I attempt to access www sites. I get a connection refused
browser message.

Fair enough.
Since Im working in non-transparent mode that is ok.

If I set mozzilla /edit/preferences/advanced/proxies/
manual proxy configuration and supply the proxies

http 192.168.10.220

The administrators guide states to use 800 instead of 80 in
non-transparent mode.

Now I cannot access the firewalls www pages, and I get
the same connection refused browser message when
attempting to access www sites.

Help !

Any ideas about what Im doing wrong ?

Regards

Chris

Clients configured with Smoothwall IP as their default gateway? Your ISP's DNS servers entered as your DNS servers?

Hi

I solved this with a lot of help from the Smoothwall forum.

I had an unknown gremlin which caused a few exceptions
in the background. I think that the exceptions were related
to my attempts to configure Red Hat 8.0 networking.

There is a full account of the problem in the Smoothwall
help forum.

If its any help to anyone.

I setup Smoothwall Express 2.0 with
no dhcp
no transparent mode
no proxies.

I setup Mozilla
Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Proxies
to direct network connection
and configured RH 8.0 networking
etho configuration
Setting the Gateway as the address of the Smoothwall
firewall !

I also set RH 8.0 to point to the gateway for the DNS.
But Im not sure that should be necessary.

One useful check was to run
traceroute www.google.com.au (address doesnt matter)
on the client and on the firewall to see whether
either (or both) could reach the internet.

I really like smoothwall so far !
But Im still evaluating it.

Hope that helps anyone with a similar problem.

Thanks again to the guys on the Smoothwall Fourn
at www.smoothwall.org

Regards

Chris
