SME Server anyone? is it ok?
 

I was looking for a resonable replacement for windows 2000 server as its cost is so high and its on its way out as far as support is concened because 2003 becomes more popular.

Has anyone here has any experience with SME server.
Im primarily looking for a domain contoller and if need be have soem tacky windwos nt machines sharing the files. I did some experimenting with mandrake, and redhat but they required alot of inital configuration.
My thinking was that because SME server is setup as a server from the begining with all the correct stuff configured and in place it would be easyer?

yay or nay?
ie am i mis-informed.

Bearing in mind i woud only have a few days to set up the server in the tranistion from windows to linux.

if you dont like SME can you suggest anything else instead?

Hi Matt,
check out www.e-smith.org to get a feel for the community involvement that goes along with SME. I currently/previously (and have since ver. 4) use an "e-smith/SME server-gateway". It is a very simple to setup network appliance. Reasonably easy to administer, because it is designed for very defined usage. Security is good, but not perfect, as we know a secure system ALWAYS goes hand-in-hand with a proactive admin! One of the learning curves is working with the "template system", takes a little getting use to. The template system does, however, add to the SME's ability to "bounce" back after small interruptions.
As a side note I have always used the unsupported developer editions, so I have no opinion on SME/Mitels support efforts. Hope this helps a little, please post for specific questions if you need.

My aim to eliminate costs, i too would probally go with the free/unsupported version. I have a resonable amount of experience with linux, and what yopu said about template, sounds like it might get me started in the right direction.
