smbclient not interactive


I thought smbclient is suppose to give you ftp like session

I type

smbclient -L //share -U my_name
then it promp for password
I type password then it listed out everything on the
network and quit

I try again thistime use

//share/path/to/place/i/own

and same thing no place for me to enter get put, etc.
what is wrong

Use it like this to start the smbclient ftp type session.
smbclient \\\\server_name\\sharename -U user_name
