smb questions/problems......

hi there:

just got a few questions about using samba to share files between machines.

i have a linux box laptop running Fecora Core1 and a Mac powerbook. now, i have downloaded samba and samba-client using apt-get. my Mac has no problems seeing my fedora and read/write files onto it. however, i am having problem to do the reverse.

i tried to access my Mac using nautilus and althought i could see the list of files in my Mac, but i cant transfer it to my fedora. in addition, nautilus won't display any folder beyond the shared folder. for example, i can see the list of files and folder in /Users/chunlee, but not /Users/chunlee/some_other_folder

so, my question is:

would i be able to get around this problem by using smb commands in the terminal? if yes, how would i do it?

many thanks

yours

I recently setup a OSX file server running samba, the version which comes with panther. what you need to do is to edit the /etc/samba.conf file. Do a search for samba config's online I find something to start with, the docs also have some good examples. Im not sure but I dont think the Aqua interface will allow you to "share" common folders just the regular user "shares".

If you have two unix system you could also use NFS file sharing which is both supported on osx and linux. This is the native UNIX network file tranfer protocoll. Its a little bit tricky to setup, look for how-to's online, there is also a gui tool for osx to do this.

good luck!

i guess you mean the smb.conf located in my Mac machine, right?

i messed around with it a little but still getting 'Sorry, couldn't display all the contents of "Shared".' message from Nautilus. any ideas?

here is what i got in smb.conf in my Mac

[homes]
comment = user Home Directories
browseable = yes
read only = no
writeable = yes
create mode = 0750

cheers
