SMB PDC + LDAP (all auth) FC2

I have 2 machines used for this PDC + LDAP setup.

The first machine:

Fedora Core 2 all updates running LDAP (ip ldap directory seems to work fine, I can use ldap browser and login to my directory make changes and see everything...all is pretty good.

Second Machine (trouble starts here):

Fedora Core 2 all updates running Samba 3 "supposedly" using ldap directory for unix auth as well as domain access. I am using the smbldap tools package and I can add the directory entries fine with that, but then of course they aren't in samba. So I use smbpasswd -a testuser and I get the following error (after entering the password).

[root@pdc samba]# smbpasswd -a test
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Failed to initialise SAM_ACCOUNT for user test. Does this user exist in the UNIX password database ?
Failed to modify password entry for user test
[root@pdc samba]#

Now I've pretty well rules out the ldap server as the problem at this point I'm sure I have something configured wrong on the PDC. If somene could be so kind as to explain this error to me and where I need to look to fix it I would be most grateful. Google searches turned up very little help regarding this error. I'd be happy to paste any files you want to see...but I want to see if anyone can explain that to me at this point.

Thanks in advance,
Chad K

Update and new issues:

I can now login to the PDC. In order to do this I had to manually add the account using useradd and then I had to do smbpasswd. This is not good. It's supposed to create the account automatically. So my shell logins aren't being authenticated from the ldap directory. Could someone point out where I went wrong?
