i have figured out how to get my remote Win98 computer to be visible in Lin neighbourhood however, i cant mount it or open files i get the error SMB connection failed........... is there some way to fix this??? thx
Well the obvious one is make sure the win 98 computer is turned on. There also may be a password. What command (exactly) are you using to try to mount the share?
Are the Samba daemons (smbd and nmbd) actually running? Are you (the user using Samba) a member of the group allowed to use Samba? Are you (the user using Samba) added and enabled in smbpasswd?

Verify that your smb.conf file is properly configured to give you the needed authorization and authentication. Also, like said above, make sure that the smb daemons are running. If you have done any re-configuration, you should probably restart them and then retry. You will also have to make sure that the users whom you want to access the shared files are listed in the smbusers file and that their passwords are in the smbpasswd file. Check these things and repost.
