Question smb.conf question

Got it done but I don't know how.......
new to Linux- I'm setting up samba for the first time and could not access a share on the Linux box from a Win NT machine. The user was a user on the local machine and was set up on the Linux machine using smbpasswd -a username. (same paswords)After reading some posts I changed security=user to security=share and it worked! The only problem is I don't know how or why.
Why wouldn't security=user work???
Running RH 7.1

Two problems, security = share is a global security option...anyone anywhere can get to your shares(unless you've got IP limiting on).

WinNT does encrypted passwords, did you make sure that your smbpasswd file is encrypted and that samba knows where it is? DId you login to the NT machine as the user on the samba machine?

I'd suggest getting swat up and running as it alleviates the headache of all this mess(and can deal with encrypting passwords quite nicely).
