Unhappy Smartlink PCI562 modem not working

Hi LQ group,

Iam running Slackware Linux 9.0 and Suse Linux 9.0 on an AMD Athlon machine. I've a Smartlink PCI562 internal modem. Both Slackware and Suse have detected the modem. I've received a CD with slmdm-2.7.14 driver for Linux from the vendor. I've tried installng the slmdm-2.7.14 and then I downloaded a few drivers provided by you at your website and tried installing them. But still I couldn't connect even once.

In Slackware, I installed slmdm-2.7.14. Before installing the driver, when 'query modem' is done through 'KPPP', the modem shows 'ready' status with all the eight ATI, ATI1 ... ATI7 fields blank. After installing the driver when 'query modem' is done the modem shows ready status with various Smartlink modem details in all the eight ATI fields. After installing the driver, the 'ls -l /dev/modem' command shows that the /dev/modem is linked to ./ttySL0. Now when I connect, KPPP log shows
ATZ
OK
ATDT172314
OK
After getting this OK, the 'KPPP' shows 'initializing modem' and remains there.

In Suse, the 'uname -r' command results 2.4.21-99-athlon. So I downloaded slmodem-2.9.6_FOR_kv_2.4.21-99-athlon_SuSE-9.0_ONLY and tried to install it. But after installation, it gives errors when given the commands :-
linux:~/slmodem-2.9.6 # modprobe slamr
modprobe: Can't locate module slamr
linux:~/slmodem-2.9.6 # /usr/sbin/slmodemd --country=INDIA /dev/slamr0
error: mdm setup: cannot open dev `/dev/slamr0': No such device
error: cannot setup device `/dev/slamr0'
But four devices /dev/slamr0 - /dev/slamr3 have been created after the driver was installed.

Please help.
