Small business one public ip

Hello all,

I want to build a test environment for some services like dns, mail, web server and some other services. The problem is that I have only one IP public IP address and one router (running linux) behind all this vm's.

I want to build it with so it will be accessible from anywhere, because I am almost all the time away from home. I have a part of this running on my laptop, under vmware, and I am planning to buy a small server and migrate it to xen everything.

My question is, would it be worth to do this with only one public IP address for the NS and the web server with port forwarding and so on? Maybe some of you have the same situation and performed this as well. I will register a domain and would like to create some webpage that needs to run all the time. ( and even worse, I have also a dynamic ip address, but I can solve this somehow ) )

Please let me know if there is somebody that has something like this running, maybe some recommendations ..

Thank you in advance.

Yes, you could do all this on one IP address, although technically you're supposed to have two separate name servers on different hosts / networks.

However, what you'll find is that if you register your domain with certain companies they will host your DNS for you as part of that contract, that way your DNS is outsourced so you don't have to worry about setting up DNS servers.

If this is for a business then why not look at starting off with a VPS? Prices start at around $30 a month. Then someone else is looking after the hardware, you have full root access to install whatever software you want and you don't have to worry about a dynamic IP address or changes etc.

I do run something like you as well. Not too much of a problem. 3 virtual networks. 1 dmz 1 vm lan and 1 to tie the physical lan to the virtualized networks.

You would need to use nat or port forwarding to serve the public. To serve multiple domains you can use apache virtual hosts

Setup a vpn for the lan stuff and lastly with a dynamic ip, it is a lot less headache to sign up with something like dyndns so that your dns records change with an ip change automatically.

I just use static dns entries but that is because ecen if the router is reset, the company seems to lease ip addresses for 24 hours at a time. It never happened that i got a different ip if reconnecing within a few hours.
