sm56 speakerphone on red hat 9

i downloaded the driver for sm56 speaker phone modem from motorola's site http://www.motorola.com/softmodem/sm56_download.htm sm56-06.05.00-1.rh9.i386.rpm i think i saw i686 in my process somewhere... so will this i386 thing work... on installing the rpm and rebooting(thr were no error messages). now dev/modem has a link to dev/sm56 i tried to configure the modem with the net config tool and added to modem to ppp0 when i try to activate the connection i get an error like ifup ppp0 is not configured ifup <device name> also the modem port is modem0 and i cant change it to ttyS0 or anything else for that matter kindly help, thanks dj |

hmmm
cant make much sense outta that..
besides theres no way i could mess with kernels and stuff...just a beginner... wont the i386 version work with my i686 architecture..... do you know any good place to check out for configuring modems and stuff thanks, dj |

sm56 is driver is supported by rh 7.2 and below and the driver u have from motorola site gives a warning "this will taint the kernel" an it does not worlk also all i386 architecture packages will work with i686 the problem there is with the driver also if u get that working with another method please let me know that also regards |
