sm56 speakerphone on red hat 9

hi,
i downloaded the driver for sm56 speaker phone modem from motorola's site
http://www.motorola.com/softmodem/sm56_download.htm
sm56-06.05.00-1.rh9.i386.rpm

i think i saw i686 in my process somewhere...
so will this i386 thing work...
on installing the rpm and rebooting(thr were no error messages).
now dev/modem has a link to dev/sm56

i tried to configure the modem with the net config tool
and added to modem to ppp0
when i try to activate the connection i get an error
like
ifup ppp0 is not configured
ifup <device name>

also the modem port is modem0 and i cant change it to ttyS0 or anything else for that matter

kindly help,
thanks
dj

hi there

sm56 is driver is supported by rh 7.2 and below
and the driver u have from motorola site gives a warning

"this will taint the kernel"

an it does not worlk
also all i386 architecture packages will work with i686

the problem there is with the driver

also if u get that working with another method please let me know that also
regards
