Slower Internet connection with Ubuntu than with Win 7

Hey all,

I'm a noob to Ubunutu Mate, but it's part of a Windows 7/Ubunutu Mate dual boot system I use.

Not sure why, but the connection to the Internet is not as fast in Ubuntu as it is in Win 7. I'm hard-wired connected to a the modem, connected to the router -- my step-father is the principle user, and he's connected as well to the modem. In Windows 7, the connection screams. No problems. In Ubuntu, it's not as fast -- not noticeable until I open a few tabs in Firefox, have a Youtube ready to go and things like that.

Some current settings:
DHCP
Per Ifconfig:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr c8:60:00:bf:b3:28
inet addr:192.168.1.2 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::ca60:ff:febf:b328/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:8238911 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:3585738 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:12270020215 (12.2 GB) TX bytes:250251441 (250.2 MB)

Network settings (in Ubuntu: System > Administration > Network
GENERAL: My name; nothing under Domain name.
DNS: 127.0.0.1
HOSTS: Local Host and My name show IP 127.0.0.1

I'm wondering if I'll need to change the DNS to match settings on the router as given by our Internet provider, but I'm not sure.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Starkman

If you set both systems to get the dhcp along with dns info for both then I'd think that both would have exactly the same. Dns would only affect the initial loading of a page. Most modems act as dns server but you can use the ISP or open dns ip addresses as a test.

What I'd do is start at a speed test site or three on both systems.

Also seeing what the nic is set to in speed may be a choice along with checksum offload choice.

It is possible that the driver you you have in linux has some bugs.

Tools like top and other types of network tools may yield answers. You may have a system resource monitor available to look at.

I'd think that your system stated above ought to be OK for general web use. I guess it could be possible that flash player issue is causing part of this.
