Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I've just installed Linux Mandrake 8.0 on a machine, which is gonna be a local server (I just wanna practice a little networking), I've been able to install a POP3 & SMTP server, but everything about connections has a very slow response when I try it from a differenr computer ...
for example .. the server's address is 184.108.40.206, and when I try to open any kinda connection from another computer, I always have to wait for about 7 seconds for each command.
For example, if I wanna check pop3 account, or send a mail using SMTP, it's instantaneous when I do it using KMail on the server, but when I try to access the same account, wether from a Mandrake 7.0 O/S or a Win98 one, I always it always takes 7 seconds to respond.
If I open an FTP connection with the server, I have to wait for that delay between every command ! .. like :
# ftp 220.127.116.11
( 7 seconds)
then I type the username & password ..
(7 seconds )
I type dir
(7 seconds )
.. and so on !!
If I transfer files with an FTP client, I need to wait 7 seconds between each file !
