I have installed LINUX Mandrake 8.0 on a 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 with 256 MB memmory and ethernet connection. I am connected to a LAN behind a firewall/router. Most network functions seem to be working fine. I can print to a network printer on my domain and I get out via my gateway. The DNS server seems to be working ok as judged by the fact that netscape works fine.
However, everytime the networks slows down it seems to kill the X server and my system freezes completely (alt, Ctrl del fails to work and the switchboard I use to switch the mouse screen and keyboard between two diffrent PCs locks up until I disconnect the keyboard of the frozen LINUX PC)
This happens with practically all network applications, (gFTP, Netscape, email, PAN Newsreader ...) They work fine for a while and then all of a sudden the system is frozen (probably as a result of temporary network hickups.
Is there anyway I can shield myself against my PC getting a heart attack everytime the network sneezes?
