Slow network connection, "Destination host unreachable"
 

Hi,

I'm new to Linux, and have run into a problem I can't solve:
My network seems too slow to access anything on the network.

My IP is set to 192.168.112.8, mask 255.255.255.0, gw 192.168.112.1.

If I ping the default gateway, I get:
"Destination host unreachable"
...about 10 times, then it starts responding, but with response-times between 7000-23000 ms!

Basically, I can't get anything to work, probably due to time-out because of the response times.
This pc is the same pc I used to run Windows on, and then everything worked, so the hardware should be fine.
I've changed network cable, even tried another network card, I first had the problem in SUSE 10,1 and I reinstalled and tried with Fedora 6 - but it was exactly the same thing..

The gateway itself is fine, works fine from Windows with responsetimes < 1 ms. Also, I tried another pc, and that's the same result as the gateway.

If I check "arp", the listning for the ip address most of the time says "(incomplete)".

I'm totally lost here, any ideas?

One idea is to carefully examine what IP numbers are used when Windows uses the gateway compared to your settings applied by Linux -- that would reveal any possible difference that maybe gives a hint towards an explanation?

I've checked that, and checked it again.. I'm running my laptop with Windows with the same config, except for another ip address ofcourse, and it works fine.
