slow internet

I'm very new to linux and I am running suse 9.3 on a home wireless network that runs off high speed cable. I have no problem picking up the network, but the connection is much slower than when i am in windows. I have disabled the firewall, and there was a small change, but not much. I also have problems downloading various programs. I guess that is just attributed to the bad connection. I've tried downloading win32 codecs many times, and it starts out fast, around 100K/sec but drops steadily to around 5K/sec or less and inevitably it stops around 40-50% and never finishes. Any suggestions?

What kind of WNIC are you using?
How is your network secured (WEP, WPA etc)
and what is the basic setup (DNS DHCP etc)

The network is not secured, it is setup with DHCP, and I do not know what WNIC is or how to check it.

a NIC is a Network Interface Card and a WNIC is a Wireless NIC

I had a similar probelm under windows due to my drivers,

At the moment it simply would be interesting to see

a) what hardware is in your computer (wireless cards)
b) what access point you are using
c) what driver you are using.

This sounds like it could be a driver problem. Have you looked on the manufacturer's web site for a driver? This could also be an IRQ conflict. Does anybody know how to check the IRQ of a WIFI card?

I have a D-Link airplus extreme G DWL-G520 card, it is a D-Link driver version 1.0.2.2, and I don't really know how to check access points;though the wireless router is in the same room as my computer.

I updated the driver in windows and it seems to have taken care of the problem. At least currently it is working like it should. Hopefully it lasts, thanks for your help.

I'm glad you got it fixed!

I had the same thing happen to my dial-up modem (USR5610B). Using the Windows driver to tweak the firmware fixed it.

Cheers!
