Angry Slow First Ping Reply

Hi firends,
I just try to ping a Linux FD2 from the console ,when I try to ping its IP adderss :
ping 192.168.0.2
I will receive a prompt reply , but when I try to ping its name (it is also a BIND server) :
ping mail.test.local
I receive a promot name resolution ,but it takes aleast 4-5 seconds to start pinging and from this point I recieve very fast and normal response.
As you understand the main problem is the FIRST ping , why ?
Thank you ,

The delay could be a DNS lookup timeout for the reverse lookup of the ip->name.

Is your bind server also authoritative for the 0.168.192.in-addr.apra zone?

An easy way to test would be to add the IP/name of the system you are trying to ping in /etc/hosts. If the delay disappears, then your DNS server is not authoritative for the reverse lookup of the 192.168.0.0/24 network.

Dear scowles,
Thank you for your reply ,but I just changed the DNS from my BIND on Linux to a FreeBSD machine(eg. 192.168.0.210),but still I experience exactly the same problem.Very fast resolution and very slow first ping reply.
It seems that there nothing wrong with name resolution system.
Thank you again,

I don't know if I agree with your assumption that both DNS servers are functioning properly. DNS servers can be configured (actually mis-configured) to only return the name->ip resolution, but not ip->name. i.e. reverse lookup.

Also, could be that your interface is configured with an IPv6 address in addition to IPv4 address? This might cause the delay you mention in your post. type: "ifconfig" to verify. Look for an IPv6 address assignment along with any errors the interface might be logging.

If all else fails, try running "tcpdump -n -i eth0" in one window and run your ping command in another window. The output of tcpdump should point out where the delay is occuring. ie DNS timeouts, arp timeouts, etc...

Thumbs down

Dear Trick,
Thank you for your comprehensive guide.I added reverse zone for the net(No improve) and checked out the eth0 configuration :

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:04:75:E7E:F1
inet addr:192.168.0.2 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::204:75ff:fee7:def1/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:9 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:9
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:618 (618.0 b)
Interrupt:10 Base address:0x9000
As you may see there is a line for IPV6 address that I am not sure how I can remove it ,moreover I did not find any error related to IPV6 in logs.
Regards,
