Smile Slow application loading when connected to network

I recently had a broadband wireless network installed. I found that everytime I had the network up, loading of applications would be very slow, 10 s as against 1 s.

Found out from doing
# uname -n
that my network node name was

I then changed my host name to this and everything is now fast.

So what is going on here and was this the right thing to do?

Grateful for any replies

Which distro do you use?
If Mandrake, check you havent disabled the Network service. It deals with the loopback interface.
