Check out Bruce Peren's Samba-3 By Example it is a great read. Google on VNC and you will find a wealth of information regarding the use of VNC.

Nothing needs to be fixed.

First of all, you probably need to tell us what exactly you want to achieve, then we will see what fits best in your situation, samba, vnc, rdp client, ...etc? I am glad you're using Slackware. It's a wonderful distro.

Samba would be a wise choice if you are looking for a file and print server.

VNC is typically used as a remote control application. This would be similar to windows remote desktop. If you want your users to be able to have remote session capability then VNC would provide this. Remote session capability generally requires less in the way of horse power on the desktop. However if you have a lot of users it would require more resources at the server.

From what you told me I would suggest Samba.

Cheers,
Fordeck
