slackware, vector linux pppoe connection question
i have been investigating linux, as i am sick of windows - for reasons that range from the technical to the philosophical - and have looked at a few distributions:
fedora core 2 & 3 ubuntu 5 & 5.1 mandrake 10.1 libranet slackware 10.1 red hat 3 turbo vector i use a pppoe (alternately called adsl or xdsl) connection for the internet and was impressed immediately at how much faster and easier linux connects than windows 2000, where i am required to install an access manager in order to generate the pppoe drivers (i have an older model of modem). this was true of everything except slackware and vector linux. i can't figure out how to create a pppoe connection in either of these os's. can anybody tell me what i'm missing? a point in the right direction would be most gratefully appreciated. thanks. digitalmojo17 |
I can speak from Slackware 10.1 or 10.2
First do you have the necessary packages installed? Namely rp-pppoe. It comes standard with Slackware 10.1 and 10,2 If you are using Slackware 10.1, the commands are Code:
adsl-setup then to start and stop the adsl connection use the following command respectively Code:
adsl-start You don't have to configure the NIC network properties. |
very cool - that was simple enough. thanks so much.
adsl-setup adsl-start adsl-stop are also the corresponding commands for vector linux 5, as well. digitalmojo17 |
I don't know about vector linux,
if rp-pppoe package is installed, it should be the same rp stand for rolling penguin In addition to what you are doing: You might want to read this post : http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...98#post1880598 It tackles starting and stopping adsl connection as normal user instead of root. |
