Slackware openLDAP server - is pam installation necessary?

Hi,

Some years ago I had a crash-course on network administration. The final project was to make a working ldap directory server integrate with NFS and postfix + procmail + dovecot. It worked (I had Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard logging in GDM and exchange e-mails on Evolution ), and I still have the configuration files and documentation I used back then.

The thing is, they were all 'pammed' Ubuntu virtual boxes with the (now dead?) upstart boot process. I want to rebuild the stock openldap Slackware package to enable the slapd daemon and use a systemd Arch box as a client. The question is - do I have to install pam on Slackware to use it as a directory server or just rebuilding the openldap package will do?

PAM is not listed as a dependency, and there are no ./configure switches to enable or disable PAM support (I just ran ./configure --help).

I guess you'll just have to try it and see what happens. Should it turn out that OpenLDAP actually requires PAM, you could always PAMify Slackware. I know it's probably heresy, but I do it so often I made a script to automate the entire process.
