Slackware DHCP networking
 

I just installed Slackware Linux, but I can't get an internet connection. I have ATT Broadband cable. When setting up the network interface in the install, I chose DHCP instead of static IP which is what I thought I was supposed to choose. I also tried netconfig, but that didnt work either. If there is any other information that you need to be able to help, please ask. Thanks for your time.

I have ATT Broadband also, and my internet connection worked after basic installation. What type of network card are you using? Do you see that it is activating on bootup?

In netconfig you want to use the DHCP option unless you are paying more for a static IP address.

did slackware correctly identify your NIC during install?

I have a Netgear FA312 fast ethernet adapter. How do i check if it is activating on startup? I chose DHCP in netconfig, and I think it correctly identified my NIC during the install. Would it be possible that i might need to dl a driver for the card? Or is there something else that I am missing? Thanks

The Netgear FA312 is supported by Linux I THINK it uses the Tulip driver. When you boot up, pay attention to the information that scrolls up your screen. Towards the end you should see the kernel attempt to activate eth0 it will probably pause for a bit and if all is well will print out the ip address assigned and an RSA key. You can also get this info by entering dmesg at the command line. If the kernel cannot activate the NIC, it should give an error. and continue booting.

are you on any network? what error messages are you getting?
Try typing lynx at the command line before starting your X server can you get a connection?

Thanks guys for all the help. The problem was that netconfig was recognizing the network adapter that was on my mb. I solved it by disabling the adapter in my BIOS settings and running netconfig again. Netconfig then recognized my Netgear FA312 and loaded natsemi.o, which is what I needed.
