Slackware 10 pppd dead

Hi,

Ive been trying to solve this problem for several days. I spent a lot of time on the internet tring to find a solution to this, but had no luck. Appreantly spackware 10 killed pppd

I have a USrobotics 56k 5686e Modem connected to Com1 (/dev/ttyS0)
When I type pppd to dial out, it connects to the modem then stalls for about a min. Then it dials out. Once it dials out it dosent setup the ppp0 interface, so I cant use the connection. I have tried recompiling the kernel making sure everyting ppp needed was in there. but it didnt fix anything. Id like to get this fixed if possible. Up to this poing I am concidering reinstalling slackware 9.0 which worked fine with this modem.

p.s. the modem works fine when I use win XP

# If you have a default route already, pppd may require the other side
