Site to Site VPN - Internet browsing

Hi,

I am moving to UAE, where internet is blocked by a proxy server of the ISP. I would like to set up some Site to Site VPN with my father's house back in Hungary, so that I can browse blocked sites, like major news websites, and use Skype for instance.
I was wondering, if I leave a small embedded linux device at my father's place and have one with me in the UAE, will I be able to browse through my dad's line?

His ADSL is only 1MBit, but if its possible, get only DNS lookup through it, and proxying, but the actual download would go through directly my line in the UAE? I am asking this because if all my traffic is routed through his line, that will slow things down badly for him and myself too.

What are my choices an chances? I don't know enough about the nature of VPN, so any information could help.

Thanks

Ben

Have you thought about using SSH and possibly with X11 forwarding? The X11 will be slow on the network. The 1MBit may only be download speed and upload speed may even be slower. Even without X11 you could still use text based web browsers via the SSH connection. Of course this is assuming UAE and Hungary ISP's do not block port 22 connections. Just a thought.

Hi

I would like this for my whole network, not only for one machine, and I am using Mac's at home. I just have a linux server, so I thought by site-to-site them with another server in Hungary, I could achieve something. Of course, I lack the knowledge, which is why I am asking.

My end goal would be to have my network as is, just be able to browse restricted sites, etc. My wife is Japanese, and she reads a lot of sites that are banned in UAE for some reason.

We have a Cisco router at home, and a few servers too. If I could turn one of my servers into a VPN host and put up another one in Hungary, could I achieve anything like this? Or maybe turn one server into a Proxy in Hungary, and just point Safari and Firefox to it? Also Skype would work I imagine.

any help is much appreciated,

Cheers

Ben
