Simply MEPIS has terribly slow dialup speeds. Why?

I've just installed SimplyMEPIS 3.3 on my internet computer and (I know, I know. I'm a Neanderthal.) my dialup speeds have more than halved than what I had with Windows running the scene - on exactly the same hardware.

I have a NetComm WebMaster CD1800 External modem, that has been working just brilliantly up till now.

Since connection I've had to wait an inordinate amount of time for each page to load. It's reporting 46666 bps in the connection window (As Windows did), but my bet is that's not the real speed available to me.

I'd like to have my old speeds back so could you help me?

Exclamation

Is there a specific reason you're using Mepis 3.3? That's quite an old release and there have been some major changes in the Mepis world since then; many of which pertain to hardware and networking.

If possible I'd suggest loading the latest Mepis release (6.5) and see if the speed improves.

Sorry, but no dice. The only internet connection with a reasonable download limit available to me is this here dialup.
And the only other way of getting Linux, is on a magazine DVD (Which is alright seeing as I'm betting that they are going to include Debian Etch in a few months time).

Are there any workarounds in the meantime?

Hmm. I'm sorry to hear about your being stuck on dial-up.

You could always purchase a hardcopy CD (or DVD if you want to get lots of packages on the disc as well) of Mepis from mepis.org or a number of other sites and have it snail-mailed. Heck, if you don't want to pay for it, I can download the iso, burn you a copy and mail it to you!

PM me if you're interested...

I'm touched by your offer of sending me a copy of a distro, but i couldn't accept - I live in Australia. I couldn't burden you with the cost of downloading the ISOs, recordable media and postage. Thank you for offering anyhow.

As for my problem, I have temporarily fixed it by intalling Windows XP. Ugh, I know, it's crap, but it's the only OS that works for now. No matter. A magazine with Debian Etch on the cover will ease my pain any minute now...

Red face

Heh...I guess I just assumed that you lived in the US when I made the offer. Thanks for being honest!

If you are able to reinstall Mepis in the future, you may want to post any questions to www.mepislovers.org (in addition to here, of course ) It's a forum dedicated solely to Mepis with a very active and knowledgable user base.
