Sharing internet to a Mac from Linux using a crossover cable: is it possible?

Hello there,

I am in a somewhat difficult situration here.

1, all computers, except for the mac, are connected to an Wireless Rounder via a Wifi card.

2, The router is running DHCP and NAT.

3, I have a Mac sitting right next to my Linux Desktop.

Now, is it possible to use a crossover cable to connect the Mac to the Linux Box, which the Linux Box itself gets the network from a Wifi card?

The Mac is currently running Ubuntu Linux but I am planning to put OSX on it, soon. It is a G3 iMac, 800mhz, has built-in ethernet port.

The Linux Box is currently running Gentoo Linux x86_64, and too have built-in ethernet port.

It is very possible. Esentially, the Linux box becomes a sudo router, passing packets from the mac to the router and beyond. As to the exact configuration steps for Ubuntu or Gentoo, I couldn't tell you. I use the Internet Connection Sharing setup with Mandriva.

So I would need to setup my Linux Box (Gentoo) as a router, running DHCP, NAT? How do I do that?

What about the Mac? I'll probably be right on Ubuntu... but what if I put OSX on it? Is networking hard to setup in OSX?

On the mac side, it should have the ip address of the Linux interface that it is connecting to as the gateway. On the Linux side, here's a link to a Howto, which should have instructions for configuring for your system: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO/.

It really isn't as hard as it seems. I've had this running since Mandrake 8.2 (they have had a wizard since 10.0, making it easy to forget how to do it).
