Sharing internet & file system between Windows98 & Redhat9
Hi guru,
I'm overloaded by various information specific to each individual's needs. Here is my problem -- I have Windows98 connected to Internet through dynalink ADSL (for windows). I also have a standalone linux redhat9 workstation on the other machine. What I want to achieve: 1. to connect Redhat9 to Windows98 so that Redhat9 can share Internet traffic. 2. to allow Redhat9 sharing Windows98 file system so that Redhat9 can access/copy file from Windows98. My questions are: 1. Is it possible to achieve these by using existing hardware? 2. I need the detailed information on how to do it since I'm not familiar with such networking. Thank you very much Chris |
Your first bet would be to get samba for the filesharing part.
www.samba.org Side note- I have had some trouble myself getting the full access to the other machines that I wanted, but I am still trying. Here's a tut I just found: http://hr.uoregon.edu/davidrl/samba.html As for the second part, I think it would be better to have RH share to the windows box since Win98 can't do it without extra crap. |
More info needed on hardware configuration
Thank your for your reply.
I have more quesions on hardware configuration. My current two computers configurations are: 1. One is P4P800Deluxe with on board 3Com 3C940 Gbit PCI LAN controller. Linux redhat9 on it. 2. Second one is GA586TX without a network card. Window98 on it. However, It's connected to ISP by using dynalink (bridged) ADSL modem (for windows) with a static IP. My goals were posted before: 1. sharing Internet traffic between the computers. 2. sharing file system between them (Bascially, Linux is to access Windows98 file system). To achieve these, what hardware should I add with cost-effectiveness. Should I replace the bridged ADSL modem with a router modem? Should I add another NIC into GA586TX machine? or, should I use cross-cable as mentioned in many posts? It seems to me that there are a quite few of hardware configurations available as I learned from various posts. However, I like to know what kind of configuration is best to me in terms of cost-effectiveness. Could anyone draw a clear picture to me since I don't have expertise in the field? Thank you in advance |
