Sharing flatbed scanner...

Scanners are pretty cheap, but they take up a lot of desk space. We take shared print servers for granted, but there isn't much out there for flatbed scanners. At least, not that I can find, and that doesn't require client software on each workstation. Which is a pain, particularly in a mixed Linux/Windows environment.

I'm curious if anyone has stumbled across (or developed) a web based frontend to saned. I know that saned can be accessed over a network, but I'm really looking for something more platform independent, and that can be accessed via browser.

I envision a menu asking for the format of the document and what to do with it...maybe send it as an email attachment to an address specified by the user...or make it available as an http download in a very trusted environment.

Realistically, we have about a dozen users who each need to scan only a handful of documents each week. Maybe a total of 5 or 6 each day for all users combined. All within a fairly small building. It would save a lot of space, and a lot of ongoing headaches, if I could set up one Linux box as a "scanner server" that could be accessed without any client software on the workstations -- just a browser.

Thoughts?
