sharing files via FTP

i don't think this is possible, but whatever. it's worth a shot..

call me lazy, but i don't feel like messing with samba or anything like that. if i have an ftp server configured for use across my computers that share nothing more than an internet connection, is there any way i can execute those files (music, for example) without downloading them from the server?

i don't want to have a shared network folder or anything.. so if anyone could offer some advice, that would be great.

You could run proftpd or the like, but Samba is the best choice. Samba is not hard to setup and both Linux and Windows systems work perfectly with it. However you do it, it requires a "download" still. Your music player can't play a file that not in memory for example. If you just want the appearance that it is not "downloading", just select the file with your music player (or whatever) with it's open command and browsing the network. Samba drives are like local drives once up and running.
I'd be glad to help you get Samba running if you wish, I wouldn't run my home network without it.
