Rep:
are you trying to use a windows xp pc as a gateway for linux redhat 9 on a laptop? if i am understading you correctly, then first enable ics from the windows machine. now that the connection is shared run redhat-config-network choose as the default gateway the ip address of the windows machine. once that is done have a look at /etc/resolv.conf, edit this file to add the ip address of the gateway box as your nameserver like so
nameserver ip address of gateway
finally, make sure the windows side will allow the connection via the firewall, i have no idea what firewall your using so i have no way of helping you configure it. this is a basic instruction set based on the info you've provided, i hope it helps, w/more info i or we may be able to help you further. i would suggest using static ip's on your lan, as it's easier to setup if your using dial up. if your on some other type of connection, this info would be useful. i hope i've helped at least a little.
good luck.
