Shared DSL thru Linksys switch w/SuSe9.1 & XP pro
After countless attempts to make my brand-new Linux box connect, I'm stumped. I installed Mandrake 10 a few days ago, and it ran fine. The next day, I got nada (shut it down the night before). No amount of configuring would get it to work. Tried re-installing Mandrake, no effect. Tried it with the Knoppix LiveCD, and it would connect. Installed SuSe 9.1, and it wouldn't. I researched everything I could, tried the multitude of fixes with no resolution. Tried removing the XP box & switch, same result. All distros would detect the on-board ethernet just fine. Here are the particulars:
BellSouth DSL with Westell Wirespeed modem model 2100 Linksys switch model EZXS55W XP box has Broadcom 440 on-board Linux box has SiS900 on-board Both boxes have MSI mobos All distros used were downloaded from LinuxISO.org. Thanks in advance for any and all help (I sure would like this to work before I try another distro). DealerMan - :newbie: |
some info of you network topolgie won't hurt :-) to help us solve your prob.
are all pc's connected to the linksys direct or is the linux box in between? where does it work, where not? post these: route -n ifconfig -a sl mritch. |
mritch, thanks for your help, here are the particulars:
destination 127.0.0.0 gateway 0.0.0.0 genmask 255.0.0.0 flags U metric 0 ref 0 use 0 iface lo bash: ipconfig: command not found I've got the switch connected to the dsl modem, and both boxes are connected directly to the switch. The XP box works the way it should. I did manage to catch something at boot when I fired the linux box up this morning about eth0 not working. Happened a bit to quickly for this old mans eyes though. Not sure if this will help, but I am able to access the Bellsouth connection page for the modem, which tells me primary & secondary DNS, IP address & gateway, and the local network IP address. Thanks again. |
