Setup local machine to allow lan machines to retrieve its local user mail.
Hi, What I am trying to do is pull local generated mail on the firewall server to a local machine. Or would it be simplier to have the firewall server to send the local mail to a local lan machine every so often?
Some current machine setup info: I have setup a firewall server with dmz setup (mostly for future ideas). I have setup the firewall as to not accept any outside connections. The same applys to lan machines trying to access firewall services. But I can open ports on eth1 to server daemons and not allow eth0 wan side to see open ports. Example to what I have done . I setup the gkrellmd to keep a watch on basic ip traffic and monitor the servers opertions. To gain access to it I had to open the needed port to on the eth1 side and not the eth0 side. That is no problem. So opening port 110 to firewall machine is no problem. First question is what email server app needs to run on the server? Would it be sendmail? I am assuming the tcp port 110 needs to be opend? Any others. Does any type of local DNS need to be Setup? Now what I have tried. I have opened tcp port 110 on eth1. When I did that and try to access it using thunderbird I get server terminated the connection. If the port was closed it just keeps trying till thunderbird times out. What I am thinking is sendamil if that is the app that I need to use needs to allow my connection on eth1. Is sendmail only defined to except on one eth* nic like eth0 only even if other nics exist? Now in thunderbird I used the IP address of eth1 as the server to connect too. Is this okay? or should I try to connect using the external ip on eth0? I feel I am putting to much effort into this, I think there is a simple solution but have not found it. Thank you for your time any help. Brian |
Sendmail is for outbound mail. You'd need a POP3 or SMTP server for incoming mail. POP3 runs on port 110. I reccomend dovecot.
