Setting up subdomains for development
Hi,
I am developing a website that will require testing of the following domains;
w_w_w. mydomain .co m
sub. mydomain .c om
^^ sorry about all the spaces and underscores, apparently I am not allowed to post urls.
My SuSE linux is connected to the internet but I wish for these 2 domain names to resolve to the local Apache website.
Can anyone help me set this environment up?
Kindest, thanks.

Hi adcworkslinux,
You can use virtual hosting to do this. Add a virtual host entry for each domains and keep the document root same for all the entries. this will do the trick. refer the apache website for documentation on virtual host configuration.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. I think I know how to setup Virtual Hosts, but I thought that in order for Virtual Hosts to work, the machine had to resolve the domain names itself.
For example, if I am on my linux machine with Apache running and I type
w_ww.amazon . c_om
Then that website loads. What I need is for
w_ww.amazon . c_om
and any subdomains thereof, to resolve to my own localhost machine.
Thanks!

Hi adcworkslinux,
you can add entries in your dns records as CNAME directives which helps to configure a canonical name for your existing name. otherwise add entries in your /etc/hosts file.
