Setting up simple file/print server to notify me of log activity across the LAN

Hi All,
I've setup a new Debian file and print server. No GUI.
What do you recommend as the best way to examine or be notified of the possible intrusions or other problems on the server? I'm placed the server in a closet downstairs and administer it via SSH2. I use webmin for configuration.

Ideally, I would like to have the server email me on my workstation in my office but if that means putting another service on the machine, I'd like to avoid that if possible.

So, should I use Exim4 or some is there a simpler MTA?
If so, how should I use it. I've been using Linux for five years, but I've never learned how to read mail from a terminal! Please point me to a howto.

Here's what I've been kicking around. Webmin has a mail module. Would that work? I think that as I'm using ssh to administer the server, I will be notifed if I have mail to read? But, I don't have an MTA setup yet, so I'm not sure.

So, I guess what I need to know are two things:

1) What is the best way to setup triggers or thresholds in the logfiles that will generate an email based on suspicious activity?

2) What is the best / easiest way to read the mail?

Any suggestions on the easiest way to do this is welcomed for sure. I can change what I'm thinking.

Thanks for any help,
Jim A.
