Is this a direct connection from the modem to your computer? Your most likely on a DHCP connection. What is the output of ifconfig? What distro? What type of NIC or are you using USB?

it is a direct connect, and it is cable so its dhcp. Im running mandrake, and it was saying ipconfig wasnt a valid command, and i dont know what the command is for linux, i thought that was it.
well, it gets some of the information such as ... ip and stuff, i've tried manually entering everything and still - no luck.
and my NIC is the onboard broadcom from dell.
ive never had this problem setting up nix before

All I can say is that I had the same problem this week trying to help a friend get Comcast cable to work with current SimplyMepis Linux, no luck. Via ethernet cable direct connect to Motorola Surfboard SB5120 cable modem, two ethernet controllers on the PC, 3-Com 3C905C and Realtek Semi-Conductor RCL-8139/8139C as reported by lspci. Both interfaces fail to come up, using DHCP, managed by pump. Same setup worked on Win2K before it was replaced with Linux. Friend is having to go back to Win for the time being. I myself use DSL broadband on the same distro. Trying to figure out what the problem is with Comcast cable.

Not connecting
ipconfig is the windows command. ifconfig is the Linux equivalent. You should be root to use it.
I wanted NAT natural protection so installed a broadband router between the cable modem and my PCs. You could try that, it's a safer bet since Linux can't detect all modems but can detect most or all routers.
