Setting up multiple routers
Hello folks, go easy on me, I'm new to linux and I have a general question about incorporating Smoothwall into my network. I currently have a LinkSys router and I'd like to continue to use it but I'd also like to setup Smoothwall as the router with a direct connection to the internet. So an example would be:
Smoothwall WAN - 1 IP : 192.168.1.1 LAN - 192.168.1.10 / 1X 255.255.255.0 Now where I get confused is how you use multiple routers in a network LAN. WOuld I have to make the Linksys somthing like: Gateway : 192.168.1.1 LAN - 192.168.2.10 /1X 255.255.255.0 Or would I need to change the subnet mask to a different mask like 255.255.0.0 Sorry for the long message and remember I'm new to Linux and Networking. thx |
No one will ever go easy on you.
OK from what I understand you have a DSL or Cable connection. On this connection do you have a static or dynamic IP. Most likly you have a dyanmic ip and you have the linksys accepting the ip as it was a computer. Then you are using DHCP do give out the rest of the IP number behind the linksys. By using a router behind a router you are creating a new network. I would open up your linksys control panel and make a static ip address for your smoothwall router. Once that is done setup smoothwall to use that IP on the wan side or (red side) you need another ethernet card to setup the lan (greenside) and use a different IP number. IE 192.168.45.5 and the subnet mask can be 255.255.255.0 Then you need to connect a hub to the green side and from there you can have the smoothwall be the DHCP for the green side. Did this help? |
Yes, this is a dymanic IP off a cable modem. I also already have a Red and green line, in other words 2 nic cards in this box.
So would I be able to take my [cable modem] <--> (Red Line) - Smoolthwall - (Green Line) <--> Linksys (DHCP/LAN) ----IP,IP,IP. With this configuration I'm not sure I'd be able to access the Smoolthwall box from a client PC because the Linksys sits behind it distributing IP's... So my question is how do I make this configuration work? ... |
In your linksys control panel add the static route to the green side of the smoothwall. Also you need to change the linksys config from gateway to router or vice versa.
