setting up internet connection slackware 11

hello guys,

i just installed slackware 11 kernel 2.6.17.13 from 2.6.18 im using adsl and a pci ethernet card, so i setup my internet using netconfig using dchp, then did cat /etc/resolv.conf which generated this in the file;

nameserver xx.xx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xx.xx.xxx.xx

then did a dhcpd eth0 to start it up and this is what it says

dhcpcd: MAC address=00:08:a2:1d:08:06

then i did a ifconfig -a

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:A1:1D:08:0B
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:160 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:24 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:18352 (17.9 KiB) TX bytes:8016 (7.8 KiB)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0x2c00

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

sit0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-30-30-30-3A-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
NOARP MTU:1480 Metric:1

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

but when i ping an ip it says "connect: Network unreachable" i hope someone can help me resolve this because i've been struggling for days to sort this out, anyways thank you in advance

Your dhcp request failed to get a lease on an IP.

Check your physical connections

Hi,

I mean check that every thing is plugged in as you expect it.

If your sure it is but you still dont have an IP address after sending your dhcp request then try this recipe:

IF your router is at IP 192.168.1.1

Code:
ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.233 up
route add default gw 192.168.1.1 et1
echo "nameserver 192.168.1.1" >> /etc/resolv.conf
This would be the basic networking setup, if your router is setup on something other than 192.168.1.1 then change the relevant number in the commands.

Cheers
-Rob
