Setting up incoming telnet sessions

Hello, I have RD Linux 7.2 installed on my system... Everything seems to be working... except for one thing... (incoming telnet sessions) I can login to my system and telnet to my computer (thorugh the console) and connect that way... but if I try to login from somewhere else... the computer just sits there waiting for a connection, but doesn't get one... (the samething happens for FTP) so why can I telnet/ftp from my computer to my IP/domain from a console screen on my machine... but not from another outside system?
I've even tried changing the firewall setup...but it stills doesn't work! help!!

What does /var/log/messages tell you? Is there a connection (dropped) or nothing at all?

I checked the /var/log/messages and /var/log/messages.1 .2 & .3 but there's nothing there at all about it.
I think the WHOLE problem is the firewall or blocked ports... I can't telnet & ftp to my system from an outside source... and I can send mail out to other computers on the internet...but I can't receive any mail from other computers...
when I try to telnet in from another source (friends computer) it just sits there saying,"trying 209.128.xxx.xx"
If I try it on my machine, it will work fine.
On my machine if I try telnet "my address" smtp
it will tell me connection refused!
so now I know that it's the firewall etc.

If I run the RH setup program (just by typing setup) you can configure the firewall from there, but it doesn't matter if I tell it to allowing incoming telnet, smtp, ftp etc. or disable the firewall all together, it still doesn't work!!??
What do i do now?

I have already enabled it again... by editing the telnet file in /etc/xinetd.d/ , I've also enabled wu-ftp , The problem is not this... I can telnet & ftp from my linux system to my domain on the internet (which points back to my linux box) but I can't connect to my system by telnet, ftp, or it cannot receive mail from outside sources....

i see that your a newb so just making sure.

You have to set up or enable telnetd
.

ps aux | grep telnetd

that will tell if its running or not.

I have the same problem.

Mara: Yes he's a newbie (so am I) and you're no better. Why check if the service is running? He can telnet to himself locally, that means the service is up! Please revise your perception of expertise.

Anyways... I found the following URL on setting up and troubleshoot Telnet, FTP:

http://www.tealseal.com/howto1.html

Also... Try troubleshooting with the following:

1. xinetd - logfile <whatever_you_want_file_name>
2. Read the file created and look for errors.

I discovered that my "/usr/sbin/in.telnetd is not executable". Which generated a critical error.

Hope this helps...

By the way... is this thread still alive?
