I can't seem to get named to start? I did a clean install with bind and the cacheing nameserver option. I was under the impression that this would run on boot? I'm using Red Hat 8 by the way. If it's running will it show up as a process named bind? I'm thinking it should. I've tried executing named. Doesn't do a flipping thing. I didn't install the graphical desktop either. Why the hell won't it start? Thanks for the help!
I think I tried just typing named and using named start. When I typed named start it gave me an error and a list of switches to use with it. Don't think I tried it from that exact directory though. Seems like it is in the path? I'll give it another shot tommorow. Thanks!
To set it to start at boot check with these cmds ntsysv, setup (menu) or chkconfig --list this will show u that the service is on or off for each runlevel. To activate it to run in runlevels 2345 then use this cmd chkconfig --level 2345 named on run chkconfig --list to confirm changes reboot and this should be activated. To check if service is running type ps -aux |grep named ot may use cmd top. To run it manually must goto dir where the scripts are stored this is found in /etc/rc.d/init.d/ in here type ./named start or to check status (running) type ./named status.
There are other ways but try these first and see what happens.
Whoa! That rocks! It started, I'm so stoked! Now I can go back to working on my zone files! Thanks a bunch! After I get everything working right I'll see if I can't get it to start on boot like aqo mentioned! Thanks!
