Setting up cable connection (not cablemodem)

I need help setting up an internet connection that works through a direct cable hooked up to the Ethernet port. I dual boot Win xp and Suse 9.1 pro.
Under xp I had to set up an estatic IP and Gateway for the Ethernet card, and then, and this is where I'm lost under Linux, I had to set up a VPN, where I had to enter another IP (or Host) similar to the first one. The VPN has a dialer where I enter my username and pass, like a clasic modem connection. Please help! Thnk you.

PS: I've been told VPN means PPP in the linux world, but again, I'm totally lost here.
