Setting up basic DNS .... how to?

So far, I have got a client PC to fetch a webpage off a server running apache. However, since there is no DNS running on the server, I can only point the client browser to the server's IP address. I am not hooking the server into the internet... so don't worry about that.

I am looking at using BIND here, but I have no clue where to start. All i know is that I have to fiddle with the /etc/named.conf file SOMEHOW so that it can see a file where the IP information of my server is stored (I think). And I may have to edit /etc/resolv.conf..........

Since I'm a newbie.... can anybody walk me through this process?

Thanks for the link. It's really helpful.

I still can't get the damn thing started though. I checked to see where the root.hints was (and it's not there in RH9, it has name.ca instead though)

I tried making a file in the /var/named directory by copying the localhost file and re-editing it, and then I adjusted the conf file to suit... BUT it still doesn't work.

I am getting an error when I look in the named log: "Binding TCP socket: address in use".

Now what?

Nah it's ok.

The client (windows) wasn't told where to find the DNS server! (Hence no page!)

The bind error happened when I tried to start it when it was already running!
