I use Suse 9.x with KDE as main desktop - KDE has network browser that will see windows shares. To get windows to see linux machines is trickier - you either need to use NFS server on linux machines and BUY an NFS client for your windows machines (which i didn't do) or else install Samba server on linux machines which then can then act as Windows server. I currently use Samba 2.x and have set it up successfully as Windows Primary Domain Controller and hence use it as my main fileserver with Windows Me and Win2K clients logging in. Also have Win XP machines but because only XP Home edition it has no 'domain aware' networking but can still browse my Samba network and access resources using network neighbourhood. XP Professional has the full networking in it. Set up can be quite tricky - but if you don't need domains it's fairly straightforward and there are fully commented sample configurations. Good luck.
