Setting up a Network on SuSE 9.0 Pro

I want to set up a simple network. Right now, I am using a laptop as my main computer, and I have an old desktop computer that I am not using. Both computers are hooked up to the internet through a router/ethernet configuration.

I want to create a simple local network so that I can back up the files of my laptop onto the desktop. I guess that means that the desktop computer would be the "server" and the laptop would be the "client"?

I don't know much about setting up a network, and I was wondering if someone out there would be kind enough to walk me through it. My IT consultant mentioned that it only takes a few minutes to set up a network where files can be shared in this way.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I almost forgot. I don't know whether it's possible, but my ideal configuration would be one where my laptop would have access to all of the files on my desktop, but the desktop would not have access to all the files on my laptop.

So I guess what I am really trying to do is create a file on the desktop computer that is "shared" between the two if that makes sense.

Thanks again.

Sorry, one more thing.

I would like to be able to have my calender on the network as well. I use the KDE KOrganizer that comes standard with the system.

Thanks,

2 pc's SuSe home networking

I would like to know very same answer. I'm not networking guru, some basics are not the question. Two pc's connected to router, with static IP's
192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.104, both can ping each other, but how do I share stuff around? How do I access to any of them with browser?
Thanks
Regards
V.
