I am a new Linux user and I have a home network with a DSL and a Wireless Access Point (Linksys WAP-11). It works perfectly in windows xp. What do I need to do to get this set up in Linux? I have launched the wizard for configuring the network in Linux and it still says I am not connected to the internet. I am so use to Windows doing everything for me, I don't know nothing about manually configuring anything.
I am correct in thinking that you want this computer to act as a router, so that it shares the DSL connection with any computer connected to the WiFi router?
Or do you want to connect to DSL through the router?
I can probably help more with the first bit than the second, but let me know more specifically what you want to do.
Also, how is the DSL modem connected to the Linux machine if that is the case?
One last thing - please show the output from
# /sbin/route
and
# /sbin/ifconfig
I imagine he's in a situation similar to me. I've just installed Mandrake 9.2 and I just want to simply get internet access on that machine. I have a cable modem connected to my NForce2 PC via ethernet. In XP, its set to use DHCP and everything works automatically.
Mandrake lists the NForce ethernet card in the hardware config manager, but I have had no sucess configuring it.
Do I have to type in something for a hostname and DNS and subnet mask? I though DHCP did this.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
PS - I'm new to linux! I'm trying to learn it and maybe ween myself off windows.
I would just like to throw in my support for this. I need help. If there is someone who could give me a step by step process on how to do everything involved in setting a network specifically with a cable nodem.
This seems to be a wide spread problem...I installed mandrake 9.2 2 days ago.
I also can't get my network working. When I do #ifconfig -a
The stuff is all working fine,,,the ip addresses r the same as in ipconfig in the windows xp console.
I tried doing #service network restart
The command, works, however the interent doesn't...it says I'm not connected, and mozilla doesn't work!
My network card is seen by mandrake, it says that the card is "up",,,but the internet doesn't work..
Also, samba can see the other computer on my network, and it can create a mount point...but the interent connection doesn't work...
PLEASE HELP!!
Oh 1 more thing, what are good c++ and java compilers to run on linux?
