setting up a network

I'm familiar with setting up a network on Windows: In Explorer, you click on My Network Places, click Set up a Home or Small Office Network, then let the wizard guide you through the rest. What would be the equivalent in Linux? Suppose that the computer I'm installing the network from is Linux but the rest run Windows. Will there be any problems interfacing? Will I need to install a server on the Linux machine?

Thanks for any help.

This is dependant on the distribution you use.

It will either be all set up automatically for you (if your network uses default settings and automatic assignment of network parameters) or you will get a wizard to guide you.

I'm not sure what you mean by distribution. On the other machines, I'm running Windows XP. Is this the same thing as a windows manager?

Perhaps the best thing would be to refere me to some sites on how to network computers from a Linux machine.
