Setting Priority on Two Network Cards Debian 6 Squeeze

I have two network cards on Debian 6 machine with two different ranges and static IP addresses. Card 1 was always the priority but some how the second card became priority

For example, card 1 is 192.168.18.4
card 2 is 192.168.23.5

I want card 1 to be the priority but when you do a simple ping, it pings from the second card not the first. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
