Settin up USB Cable modem in linux newbie help


First time linux user i am running a slackware based linux distro topologilinux v 2.0.2. i have a ntl ambit cable modem using usb port i am using the KDE desktop environment and i want to configure my cable modem for internet access without buyin a NIC card if possible. when i enter the kde control panel the usb modem is listed in the devices can;t get it to function
