Set up wireless on mint
I am thinking of trying mint on my PC. I am using the latest version
and I just have one problem I cannot use wireless. I used this guide http://www.wikihow.com/Set-up-a-Wire...twork-in-Linux Quote:
Code:
iwconfig Code:
mintwifi Code:
sudo lshw http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawik...imax_EW-7811Un I installed drivers but I still doesn't work Code:
ndiswrapper -l Edimax Technology Co., Ltd EW-7811Un 802.11n Wireless Adapter [Realtek Edimax Technology Co., Ltd EW-7811Un 802.11n Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8188CUS] My questions are 1) Can this card work (I guess not) 2) Can anyone suggest a card that will work? |
I suspect it can work, I am a bit confused as to why you used this process. I might have been tempted to use the realtek drivers at their site.
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...rue#RTL8188CUS This is a good video I think. I didn't have sound so see if it is the same. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFh2EZhUKgs |
I downloaded rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.6.0.20120405
And Code:
sudo ./install.sh Code:
Authentication requested [root] for make driver: |

If that was a good idea then I did like that because of a mixture of ignorance and good google results. |
Didn't mean to suggest you failed.
The build process needs some support. I should know what you need but I can't think of it right now. See the error log. Darn, don't get old. You end up forgetting. Something simple to add on, like source files from mint software add. Header file? Anyway see the error log. To compile stuff you usually need to add in stuff. You could maybe get ndiswrapper working too. Many distro's seem to only have partial support and you have to apt get the rest of it. I think this is the usual way to get driver support. Hope it is built into distro, add it using linux drivers, then try ndiswrapper. |
To be honest I could buy a different modem or use a different distro any ideas?

/lib/modules/2.6.32-21-generic/build is a symbolic link to /usr/src/2.6.32 or to wherever the 2.6.32 linux source code is. So install the Linux source code for kernel 2.6.32 and make sure the symbolic link for "build" points to it. I got it to work on a Slackware 13.37 system (2.6.37.6 kernel) using this version: RTL819xCU\ _USB_linux_v3.4.3_4369.20120622.zip There is yet a later/newer version. Go here under RTL8188CUS for the latest: http://www.realtek.com/downloads/dow...oads=true#2292 After compiling/installing the new module be sure to blacklist the old rtl8192cu module... I found this guide helpful: http://itsapassion.wordpress.com/201...linux-mint-12/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm going to Boston to see my doctor. Thanks a lot for the help.
I have been ill (still am but getting better) since you replied so I didn't have a chance to look at this before. Anyway I tried a slightly different version of Mint Code:
